Bollinger Bands vs. Fibonacci Bands: what changes?
Compare the formulas behind Bollinger and Fibonacci bands, then choose what to test without assuming one is more accurate.
Bollinger Bands and Fibonacci bands can look similar while measuring different things. Check the formula before comparing their signals.
The main difference
Standard Bollinger Bands place bands around a moving average using standard deviation. A common starting configuration is 20 periods and two standard deviations. The width changes as price dispersion changes. See TradingView's Bollinger Bands guide.
“Fibonacci bands” is a family name, not one standard formula. For example, Shizaru's version uses ATR and Fibonacci multipliers; Rashad's version uses a volume-weighted average and standard deviation. Both can respond to volatility. The old claim that Fibonacci bands are always fixed is incorrect.
Compare them fairly
- Use the same symbol, session and timeframe.
- Write down what a band touch means in your test: an observation, an entry condition or an exit condition.
- Keep other rules unchanged while swapping the band calculation.
- Check sideways and trending periods separately.
A touch of an outer band does not guarantee a reversal. Neither name establishes which tool is better for scalping.
