How to read a TradingView indicator before using it
Five checks that turn an unfamiliar script into an understandable research candidate: purpose, calculation, timing, access and evidence.
Before adding an unfamiliar indicator, try to explain what it shows and what it does not show. If the publication leaves those questions unanswered, ask the creator before relying on it.
Read for five things
- Purpose: Is it describing trend, momentum, volume, volatility or something else?
- Calculation: Which prices, volumes, timeframes and settings affect it?
- Timing: When does a signal become available, and can it later move?
- Access: Can you use the script, see its code and create the alerts you need?
- Evidence: Are claims supported by a reproducible test or just selected screenshots?
Use popularity as a discovery clue
A large discussion may help you find questions to investigate. It does not prove that a script is profitable or appropriate for your market. DeepAlpha's likes, views and comments are recovered historical snapshots.
