UNDERSTAND THE TOOL

How it works

The COT signal uses three primary calculations to assess market positioning: COT RSI, COT Index, and Flip Detection. COT RSI normalizes the net positioning difference between non-commercial and commercial traders over multiple timeframes, creating a 0-100 scale that highlights sentiment extremes.

The COT Index tracks where current non-commercial net positions reside within their historical range, reflecting institutional accumulation or distribution phases. Flip Detection analyzes crossovers between long and short percentages, identifying potential changes in directional bias among different trader groups.

Why it may be useful

This indicator provides unique insights into institutional trader behavior, offering traders a window into sophisticated market participants' strategies and sentiment. By tracking how large traders are positioning themselves, traders can gain early warnings about potential market reversals or trend confirmations.

The multi-layered approach allows traders to understand not just price movement, but the underlying sentiment driving those movements. It helps identify periods of institutional overconfidence or market exhaustion, which can precede significant trend changes.

When to explore it

The COT signal is most effective for longer-term trading strategies, particularly swing trading and trend following approaches. It works best in markets with significant institutional participation, such as forex, commodities, and major stock indices where commercial and non-commercial traders have substantial positions.

Traders should use this indicator as a complementary tool alongside other technical and fundamental analysis methods. It is particularly valuable during periods of market uncertainty or when seeking to confirm potential trend reversals based on institutional positioning.
