How it works

The inside bar indicator automatically scans price charts to detect bars where the entire price range falls within the high and low of the previous bar. It uses a simple algorithmic comparison checking if the current bar's high is lower than the previous bar's high and the current bar's low is higher than the previous bar's low.

Once an inside bar is identified, the indicator highlights the bar with a specific color and draws horizontal lines at the parent bar's high and low prices. The script tracks whether the inside bar remains intact or gets broken by subsequent price movements, providing visual confirmation of price consolidation patterns.

Why it may be useful

Inside bars represent critical moments of market consolidation and potential trend reversal or continuation signals. They offer traders insights into periods of reduced volatility and potential breakout opportunities, helping identify moments when market participants are temporarily undecided about price direction.

By visually highlighting these patterns, traders can more easily recognize potential entry and exit points. The indicator helps traders prepare for potential breakout trades, showing where price might experience significant movement after a period of compression and providing a clear visual representation of market dynamics.

When to explore it

Inside bar patterns work best during trending markets with clear directional momentum, where price consolidation can signal potential continuation or reversal. Traders should look for these patterns in timeframes ranging from short-term scalping to longer-term swing trading, as they can provide valuable insights across different trading styles.

The indicator is particularly useful when combined with other technical analysis tools like support/resistance levels, trend lines, or momentum indicators. Traders should be cautious and wait for confirmation of the breakout direction, using additional context like volume, overall market trend, and other technical signals to validate the potential trade setup.
