How it works

The swing/pivot indicator identifies significant price points by comparing a center bar's high or low with surrounding bars. For a swing high, the center bar must have a higher high than the bars to its left and right, typically using a configurable number of adjacent bars. For a swing low, the center bar must have a lower low than the surrounding bars.

The indicator draws circles at the price level of the center bar, marking these pivotal points until a new swing high or low is identified. By default, it can follow Bill Williams' Fractal method of using two bars on each side, but users can adjust the number of adjacent bars to suit different timeframes and trading styles.

Why it may be useful

Swing/pivot indicators provide traders with an objective method to analyze market structure and identify potential trend changes. By highlighting significant price points, these indicators help traders understand the underlying market dynamics and make more informed trading decisions.

The visual representation of swing highs and lows allows traders to quickly recognize market patterns, such as trending or ranging conditions. This information is crucial for determining potential entry and exit points, understanding market momentum, and developing more effective trading strategies across various timeframes.

When to explore it

Swing/pivot indicators are most effective in markets with clear price movements and distinct trend structures. They work best in trending markets where price is making consistent higher highs or lower lows, allowing traders to identify key turning points and potential trend reversals.

These indicators are particularly useful during periods of market volatility, where rapid price changes can obscure underlying trends. Traders can use swing/pivot points to validate trend strength, confirm support and resistance levels, and develop more precise entry and exit strategies across different trading timeframes.
