How it works

Pivot points are calculated using the previous period's high, low, and closing prices to determine key reference levels for potential market movements. The primary calculation generates a central pivot point (PP), along with support levels (S1, S2) and resistance levels (R1, R2), which traders use as potential turning points.

Additional extreme levels like S3, S4, S5, R3, R4, and R5 are also calculated to provide insights during unusual market conditions. These levels can be computed for various timeframes including daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly, with daily pivot points being most popular among day traders.

Why it may be useful

Pivot points provide traders with objective, mathematically derived price levels that can help predict potential market reversals and breakout opportunities. By offering clear reference points, they help traders make more informed decisions about entry, exit, and stop-loss placement without relying solely on subjective analysis.

These indicators are particularly valuable because they offer a standardized method for identifying key price levels across different markets and timeframes. They transform raw price data into actionable trading insights, helping traders anticipate potential support and resistance zones before they occur.

When to explore it

Pivot points are most effective in markets with clear trending or range-bound behavior, such as forex, stocks, and commodities. They work best when used in conjunction with other technical indicators to confirm potential trade signals and validate market sentiment.

Traders should be especially attentive to pivot point levels during periods of high market volatility or when trading instruments with consistent daily trading patterns. They are particularly useful for short-term traders like day traders and scalpers who need quick, objective reference points for making rapid trading decisions.
