How it works

The oscillator begins by calculating the Relative Strength Index (RSI) and then applies a moving average to this value. It then measures the standard deviation of the RSI from this moving average, creating a unique band-based indicator similar to a Bollinger %B oscillator.

When the oscillator line crosses outside the standard deviation band, it generates potential trade signals. Crossing from below indicates an end to oversold conditions, while crossing from above suggests the conclusion of overbought conditions, signaling potential trend reversals.

Why it may be useful

This oscillator provides traders with a nuanced view of market momentum by highlighting short-term price extremes and potential reversal points. It offers a more dynamic approach to identifying market conditions compared to traditional RSI indicators, allowing for more precise entry and exit timing.

By adjusting the standard deviation settings, traders can customize the indicator's sensitivity to market movements, making it adaptable to different trading styles and market conditions. This flexibility allows traders to balance trade frequency with signal reliability.

When to explore it

The oscillator is most effective in markets with clear trending or ranging characteristics, where price tends to oscillate between overbought and oversold conditions. It works particularly well in liquid markets with consistent price movements, such as major forex pairs, large-cap stocks, and prominent cryptocurrency pairs.

Traders should use this indicator in conjunction with other technical analysis tools to confirm signals and reduce false positives. It is especially useful for traders employing Dollar Cost Averaging, swing trading, or scalping strategies across various timeframes.
