How it works

The Smart Breakout indicator starts by calculating a 20-day Donchian channel, which identifies the highest high and lowest low over the past 20 bars. When price closes above the highest high, it generates an entry signal marked with a green line and 'ENTRY' label. At the same time, it initializes a trailing stop using 2 × ATR(14).

The trailing stop is dynamically adjusted, moving up only when the new (close – 2 × ATR) exceeds the prior stop level. This ensures the stop provides protection while allowing for potential trend continuation. The indicator also offers a daily lock option that freezes ATR and price calculations at the daily resolution, maintaining consistent stop levels across different timeframe views.

Why it may be useful

The Smart Breakout indicator provides traders with a systematic approach to capturing trend movements while managing risk through an intelligent trailing stop mechanism. By using the Donchian channel breakout, it helps traders identify potential trend initiation points with clear entry signals.

The ATR-based trailing stop adds a critical risk management component, allowing traders to protect profits and limit potential losses. The daily lock feature provides additional flexibility, ensuring consistent stop calculations across different chart timeframes and helping traders maintain a stable trading approach.

When to explore it

The Smart Breakout indicator is most effective in markets with clear trend movements and moderate volatility. It works particularly well in liquid markets where price trends can develop and sustain momentum over short to medium-term periods. Traders can benefit from this indicator in various asset classes, including stocks, forex, and futures.

It is especially useful during periods of market trending behavior, where breakouts are more likely to generate meaningful price movements. Traders should combine this indicator with other technical and fundamental analysis to confirm signals and reduce false breakout risks.
