How to compare trading indicators fairly

A practical comparison method: give indicators the same job, keep test conditions fixed and judge more than a win-rate headline.

There is no useful winner in an indicator comparison until you define the job. Comparing a momentum oscillator with a volume benchmark as if they answer the same question can hide what each contributes.

Start with a testable question

For example: “Does this filter reduce unwanted entries in sideways periods?” is more useful than “Is this the best indicator?” Write the rule before looking for supporting examples.

  1. Choose one symbol, timeframe and test window.
  2. Keep entries, exits and position sizing consistent unless they are the specific thing being compared.
  3. Record every qualifying signal, including inconvenient ones.
  4. Include estimated fees and slippage in any strategy simulation.
  5. Check a later period that was not used to choose the settings.

TradingView distinguishes indicator plots from executable strategy simulations. Its strategy documentation explains simulation assumptions and testing limitations.

Keep the conclusion narrow

Report the exact setup and sample, not “indicator A always wins.” Compare signal timing, trade count, losses and usability alongside returns. DeepAlpha has not performed a controlled head-to-head backtest of the recovered catalog.
