The Diluted Earnings Per Share Signal (DEPSS) is a fundamental indicator that analyzes earnings surprises by comparing diluted EPS to analyst estimates to generate trading signals.

UNDERSTAND THE TOOL

How it works

The DEPSS indicator calculates the Diluted Earnings Surprise by subtracting the EPS Estimate from the Diluted EPS and dividing by the EPS Estimate. It converts this difference into a percentage to determine the earnings performance.

If the Diluted Earnings Surprise exceeds a predefined threshold (default 20%), it generates a bullish signal with a green triangle. Conversely, if the surprise falls below the negative threshold, it produces a bearish signal with a red triangle. This approach provides a nuanced view of a company's earnings performance beyond simple beat-or-miss metrics

Why it may be useful

The DEPSS indicator offers traders a more sophisticated approach to evaluating earnings performance by using diluted EPS, which accounts for potential share conversions. It helps investors understand the true earnings potential of a company by considering convertible securities like stock options and preferred shares.

This method provides deeper insights into a company's financial health than traditional EPS measurements. By highlighting potential discrepancies between reported earnings and analyst expectations, the indicator can reveal underlying financial strengths or weaknesses

When to explore it

The DEPSS indicator is most effective during earnings seasons when companies release quarterly financial reports. It works best for fundamental investors seeking to understand a company's financial performance beyond surface-level metrics. Traders can use this signal to identify potential market overreactions or underreactions to earnings announcements.

It is particularly useful for stocks with complex capital structures or those with significant convertible securities. The indicator can help investors make more informed decisions by providing a nuanced view of a company's earnings potential
