How it works

The Global Strategic Risk Appetite Index (GSRAI) combines four key market components through a standardized z-score methodology. These components include high-yield credit spreads, VIX volatility, equity/bond performance ratio, and the oil/gold commodity ratio, each normalized to enable meaningful cross-asset comparisons.

Each component is transformed using z-score normalization, which subtracts the mean and divides by standard deviation to create a standardized scale. The four standardized components are then equally weighted and integrated into a composite score, providing a comprehensive view of market risk sentiment across different asset classes.

Why it may be useful

The GSRAI offers traders a holistic perspective on market psychology by capturing underlying investor sentiment before it fully manifests in price action. By synthesizing multiple market indicators, it provides a nuanced view of risk appetite that goes beyond traditional single-asset analysis.

This approach allows traders to understand broader market dynamics, potentially identifying shifts in investor behavior and risk tolerance. The index helps traders anticipate potential market movements by revealing the collective psychological state of market participants across different asset classes.

When to explore it

The GSRAI is most effective during periods of market transition or uncertainty, where traditional single-asset indicators might provide incomplete insights. It is particularly valuable when analyzing macroeconomic shifts, geopolitical events, or significant financial market changes that impact investor sentiment.

Traders should pay special attention to the index when it crosses key thresholds: values above 70 indicate 'Risk-On' conditions, below 30 suggest 'Risk-Off' environments, and values between 30-70 represent neutral market sentiment. These transitions can signal potential trading opportunities across multiple asset classes.
