UNDERSTAND THE TOOL

How it works

The COT data library generates specialized ticker IDs to access Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) data through TradingView's request.security() function. It provides functions to convert futures roots, currencies, and symbols into CFTC codes.

Users can specify report types (Legacy, Disaggregated, Financial), include or exclude options, and select specific metrics like open interest, trader positions, and concentration levels

Why it may be useful

COT data offers critical insights into market sentiment by revealing the positions of different trader categories such as commercial, non-commercial, managed money, and others.

This information helps traders understand market dynamics, potential trend reversals, and overall market positioning. By analyzing open interest and trader positions, investors can gain a deeper understanding of institutional and professional trader behavior

When to explore it

The COT data library is most effective when trading futures markets with significant institutional participation. It is particularly useful for traders seeking to understand market sentiment in commodities, currencies, and financial futures.

Traders can use this tool to identify potential trend changes, assess market sentiment, and make more informed trading decisions based on the positions of different market participant groups
