How it works

The MA Deviation Marking & Alert calculates a Simple Moving Average (SMA) over a specified period and computes the percentage deviation of the closing price from this average. It uses the formula `((Close - SMA) / SMA) * 100` to determine the exact percentage difference between the current price and its moving average.

When the deviation exceeds predefined positive or negative thresholds, the indicator visually marks the price bars with distinct background colors. Red backgrounds indicate prices above the positive threshold, while green backgrounds signal prices below the negative threshold, providing an immediate visual representation of significant price movements relative to the moving average.

Why it may be useful

The MA Deviation indicator helps traders identify potential market extremes and assess price momentum by revealing when an asset's price has significantly diverged from its average. By highlighting periods of substantial deviation, traders can quickly spot potential overbought or oversold conditions that might precede price corrections or trend reversals.

Moreover, the indicator offers versatile alert conditions that can be customized to match individual trading strategies. Traders can set up notifications for positive deviations, negative deviations, or any deviation, enabling proactive monitoring of price movements and potential trading opportunities across different market scenarios.

When to explore it

This indicator works best in markets with clear trending characteristics where price tends to oscillate around a moving average. It is particularly useful in volatile assets or during periods of significant price movement, where identifying potential overextension can help traders anticipate possible trend reversals or consolidation phases.

Traders should adjust the MA period and threshold percentage based on the specific asset's volatility and trading timeframe. Lower thresholds will generate more frequent signals, while higher thresholds focus on more significant price deviations, allowing traders to fine-tune the indicator to match their specific trading style and risk tolerance.
