How it works

The indicator calculates trend strength by first computing a moving average of closing prices using either Simple or Exponential Moving Average methods. It simultaneously measures market volatility through Average True Range (ATR) and calculates a moving average of trading volume.

The trend strength is then derived by comparing the closing price to its moving average, dividing this difference by volatility, and multiplying it by volume normalized through its moving average. This complex calculation creates a comprehensive metric that integrates price movement, market volatility, and trading volume into a single trend strength indicator.

Why it may be useful

By combining multiple market factors, this indicator provides traders with a more nuanced understanding of trend dynamics beyond simple price movement. It helps identify not just trend direction, but also the underlying strength and potential sustainability of that trend.

The multi-dimensional approach allows traders to gain insights into market momentum that might be missed by single-factor indicators. This comprehensive analysis can help traders make more informed decisions about potential entry and exit points, reducing the risk of trading against strong market currents.

When to explore it

This indicator is most effective in markets with clear trending characteristics, where price movement, volatility, and volume are relatively consistent. It works particularly well in liquid markets with significant trading activity, such as major stock indices, forex pairs, and heavily traded commodities.

Traders should be cautious during periods of market uncertainty, consolidation, or extreme volatility, where the indicator's signals might become less reliable. It is best used in conjunction with other technical analysis tools to confirm signals and provide a more comprehensive market assessment.
