How it works

The year-over-year indicator compares the most recent data point with the corresponding data point from one year ago, creating a comparative benchmark for performance. It automatically adjusts the lookback period based on the selected timeframe, using 3 months for quarterly data and 1 month for monthly data, ensuring consistent comparative analysis.

TradingView aggregates weekly data into monthly data points, allowing for smoother trend visualization. An SMA (Simple Moving Average) is then applied to the year-over-year data, helping to smooth out short-term fluctuations and provide a clearer view of the underlying trend over time.

Why it may be useful

This indicator provides traders with a powerful tool for understanding long-term market performance and identifying sustained trends beyond short-term price movements. By comparing current data with historical performance, traders can gain insights into the market's consistent behavior and potential future direction.

The year-over-year approach helps eliminate seasonal variations and provides a more stable perspective on market trends. By applying an SMA, the indicator further reduces noise and highlights more significant, longer-term market movements, making it valuable for strategic decision-making.

When to explore it

The year-over-year indicator is most effective in markets with clear, sustained trends and where long-term performance analysis is crucial. It works best in relatively stable markets where year-to-year comparisons can reveal meaningful patterns and potential future movements.

Traders should use this indicator when seeking to understand broader market trends, compare performance across different time periods, and make strategic decisions based on consistent, long-term data. It is particularly useful for swing traders and investors looking to identify sustained market directions beyond short-term volatility.
