How it works

Market breadth calculates the ratio between symbols moving up and down in a given market, creating an oscillator that depicts overall market trend. By default, it uses NYSE advancers and decliners, but can also be customized with two breadth baskets of up to 39 symbols each for different market segments.

The indicator uses various smoothing techniques like SMA, EMA, and HMA to refine the breadth line. It provides a threshold mode that can be fixed at zero or dynamically adjusted, helping traders identify bullish and bearish market states based on the proportion of advancing versus declining symbols.

Why it may be useful

Market breadth provides a comprehensive view of market sentiment by revealing the underlying strength or weakness across multiple symbols simultaneously. It helps traders understand whether a market movement is broad-based or driven by a few high-weight symbols, offering insights into potential trend sustainability and market correlation.

By analyzing the percentage of up and down moves during different market states, traders can develop more informed trading strategies. The indicator highlights market extremes and potential reversals, allowing traders to anticipate broader market movements and adjust their risk management accordingly.

When to explore it

Market breadth is most effective when used on major indices like S&P500, QQQ, or IWM, providing a holistic view of market trends. It works best during periods of significant market transitions, helping traders identify potential trend reversals and market sentiment shifts.

The indicator is particularly useful when examining sector-specific movements or comparing performance across different asset classes like equities, cryptocurrencies, or specific market segments. Traders can leverage market breadth to develop directional biases, assess market correlation, and detect potential divergences between price action and broader market trends.
