How it works

The indicator calculates the Stochastic Momentum Index (SMI) on both the current chart timeframe and a higher timeframe, typically 10 minutes. It compares the SMI value to its Exponential Moving Average (EMA) to generate trading signals, with specific rules for bullish and bearish conditions.

For bullish signals, the chart timeframe SMI must cross above its EMA while the higher timeframe SMI shows increasing momentum and remains within a neutral range between -40 and +40. Conversely, bearish signals occur when the chart timeframe SMI crosses below its EMA during periods of decreasing momentum in the higher timeframe.

Why it may be useful

This multi-timeframe momentum indicator helps traders identify high-probability trading opportunities by aligning short-term price movements with broader market trends. By analyzing momentum across different timeframes, traders can make more informed decisions and reduce the likelihood of trading against the prevailing market direction.

The indicator provides visual cues through signal dots and background shading, making it easier for traders to recognize potential entry points. Its ability to filter out trades during extreme market conditions helps traders avoid entering positions during potentially unstable market phases.

When to explore it

The indicator is most effective in markets with clear momentum trends and sufficient volatility, such as forex, stocks, and cryptocurrency markets. It works best when used in conjunction with other technical analysis tools and during periods of consistent market movement.

Traders should use this indicator as part of a comprehensive trading strategy, combining its signals with price action confirmation, risk management techniques, and an understanding of broader market context. It is particularly suited for short to medium-term trading styles, with optimal performance in day trading and scalping scenarios.
