How it works

The Footprint Boxes indicator samples lower timeframe candles within a higher timeframe bar, tracking price movements and their corresponding volume. It divides the bar's price range into predefined bins and calculates signed volume for each interval, distributing volume proportionally across touched price segments.

When the parent bar closes, the indicator determines the true high and low of the sampled candles, then sums the signed volume in each bin. It creates color-coded boxes representing volume distribution, with green indicating net buying and red showing net selling, and the intensity of the color reflecting the percentage of total volume in each bin.

Why it may be useful

By providing a detailed visual representation of volume distribution, traders can gain insights into the underlying market dynamics within a single bar. The granular breakdown helps identify where buying and selling pressure concentrated, revealing potential areas of market sentiment and strength.

The color-coded boxes and percentage labels offer an immediate understanding of price action, allowing traders to quickly assess whether buyers or sellers dominated a particular price range. This level of detail can help traders make more informed decisions about market entry, exit, and potential trend reversals.

When to explore it

The Footprint Boxes indicator is most effective in volatile markets with significant price movements and volume fluctuations. It works best for traders who want a deep, visual understanding of intra-bar volume dynamics, particularly in day trading and scalping scenarios where precise volume analysis is crucial.

Traders should use this indicator when they want to go beyond traditional volume analysis and gain a more nuanced view of buying and selling pressure. It is particularly useful in markets like futures, forex, and active stocks where volume patterns can provide critical insights into market sentiment and potential price movements.
