How it works

The Footprint Chart indicator uses a heuristic approach to estimate volume distribution between buyers and sellers for each candlestick. For bullish candles, it assumes 60% of volume is on the ask (buys) and 40% on the bid (sells), while bearish candles reverse this distribution. Neutral candles split the volume evenly at 50% for each side.

The indicator calculates a simplified delta by subtracting sell volume from buy volume, creating a quick visual representation of market pressure. It displays this delta on each candlestick with a color-coded label, using green for positive delta (buying pressure) and red for negative delta (selling pressure).

Why it may be useful

This indicator provides traders with a visual estimate of order flow dynamics, helping them understand the underlying market sentiment beyond simple price movement. By revealing the potential imbalance between buyers and sellers, it offers insights into the strength and direction of market pressure that might not be immediately apparent from price action alone.

The delta and volume distribution can help traders identify potential trend confirmations or reversals, giving them a more nuanced view of market activity. It bridges the gap between price movement and volume analysis, offering a quick and intuitive way to assess market dynamics without requiring complex order book data.

When to explore it

The Footprint Chart indicator is most effective in volatile and liquid markets where volume distribution can provide meaningful insights into market sentiment. It works particularly well for short-term trading strategies, such as scalping and day trading, where understanding immediate market pressure is crucial for making quick trading decisions.

Traders should use this indicator in conjunction with other technical analysis tools to confirm signals and gain a more comprehensive market view. It is especially useful during key market sessions, such as market opens, major economic announcements, and periods of significant price movement where volume dynamics can reveal important trading opportunities.
