The Mean Deviation Index (MDX) measures price deviation from a mean using standard deviation of ATR, visually indicating when price moves beyond a specified threshold.

UNDERSTAND THE TOOL

How it works

The MDX calculates price deviation by first filtering an Exponential Moving Average (EMA) using the standard deviation of the Average True Range (ATR). It establishes a mean baseline and then determines whether price has moved more than a specified ATR multiplier away from this mean.

When price exceeds the threshold, the indicator changes background color to green (above mean) or red (below mean), providing a visual representation of price movement relative to its average

Why it may be useful

The MDX helps traders understand price volatility and potential trend shifts by quantifying how far price has deviated from its mean. By using ATR as a volatility measure, it provides context for price movement that goes beyond simple directional analysis.

This approach allows traders to identify potential trend beginnings, breakouts, and significant price movements that might signal important market transitions or trading opportunities

When to explore it

The MDX works best in markets with clear trending characteristics and moderate volatility. Traders can use it to spot potential trend entries by watching background color changes, either aggressively entering on color shifts or more conservatively waiting for pullbacks.

It is particularly useful in swing trading and day trading scenarios where understanding price deviation from the mean can provide insights into potential trend continuation or reversal
