How it works

The Stock Charts Technical Rank (SCTR) calculates a stock's technical performance by analyzing six distinct technical indicators across long, medium, and short-term time frames. It assigns different weights to these indicators: 30% each for long-term metrics like 200-day exponential moving average and 125-day rate of change, 15% each for medium-term indicators such as 50-day EMA and 20-day rate of change.

The remaining 10% is distributed to short-term indicators including the three-day slope of percentage price oscillator histogram and relative strength index. These components are mathematically combined and scaled to produce a final score ranging from 0 to 99.99, providing a comprehensive view of a stock's technical strength and momentum.

Why it may be useful

The SCTR provides traders with a holistic, objective assessment of a stock's technical performance by integrating multiple indicators into a single, easy-to-interpret numerical ranking. This approach eliminates subjective interpretation and offers a standardized method for comparing stocks within specific market groups, helping investors quickly identify potentially strong or weak technical setups.

By synthesizing data from different time frames and indicator types, SCTR offers a more nuanced evaluation than single-indicator analysis. Traders can use this ranking to make more informed decisions about potential entry and exit points, compare stocks across sectors, and develop more robust trading strategies based on comprehensive technical analysis.

When to explore it

The SCTR is most effective when evaluating stocks within specific market groups or sectors, providing a comparative technical ranking that helps identify relative strength and potential trading opportunities. Traders can use high SCTR scores to spot stocks with strong upward momentum and consider them for potential long positions, while low scores might indicate stocks suitable for short-selling strategies.

This indicator is particularly useful during market transitions or when seeking to compare multiple stocks with similar fundamental characteristics. Investors can leverage SCTR scores to screen potential investments, validate existing positions, and make more data-driven decisions about portfolio composition and individual stock selection.
