How it works

The CVD Trend Indicator calculates the volume delta for each candlestick by assessing whether the price closes higher or lower than its opening price. If a candle closes higher, its entire volume is considered buying volume, creating a positive delta. Conversely, if a candle closes lower, its volume is considered selling volume, resulting in a negative delta.

These individual deltas are then cumulatively summed over time, creating a CVD line that provides a visual representation of buying and selling pressure. The indicator also offers an optional Simple Moving Average (SMA) of the CVD, which helps smooth out the line and identify the prevailing trend in market dynamics more clearly.

Why it may be useful

The CVD Trend Indicator is crucial for traders because it offers deeper insights into market sentiment beyond traditional price action analysis. By tracking the cumulative volume delta, traders can understand whether buyers or sellers are more aggressive and gauge the underlying strength of a trend. This helps in confirming trend directions, identifying potential reversals, and providing a more nuanced view of market momentum.

Moreover, the indicator's ability to highlight divergences between price and volume can signal potential trend weakening or impending reversals. The optional moving average and color-coded background provide additional visual cues, making it easier for traders to quickly interpret market dynamics and make more informed trading decisions.

When to explore it

The CVD Trend Indicator is most effective in markets with clear volume data and during periods of significant price movement. It works particularly well in liquid markets like forex, futures, and heavily traded stocks where volume information is readily available and meaningful. Traders can use this indicator to confirm trend strength, identify potential entry and exit points, and assess the underlying market sentiment.

The indicator is especially useful during key market sessions, such as stock market opens, economic news releases, and periods of high trading activity. Traders should combine the CVD Trend Indicator with other technical analysis tools and consider using it across multiple timeframes to validate signals and reduce false positives.
