How it works

Relative Strength (RS) calculates the performance of a stock by comparing its percentage change to a corresponding market index over the same time period. The calculation involves dividing the stock's percentage change by the index's percentage change, which produces a ratio that oscillates around zero.

The script automatically selects an appropriate benchmark index based on the company's market capitalization. For large-cap stocks over 75,000, it uses the Nifty index; for mid-cap stocks between 25,000-75,000, it uses the Midcap 150; for smaller companies, it progressively uses Smallcap 250 or Nifty Microcap 250 indices.

Why it may be useful

Relative Strength provides traders with a powerful comparative metric to understand how a stock performs against its market segment. By revealing whether a stock is outperforming or underperforming its benchmark, it offers insights into potential investment opportunities and market sentiment.

This indicator helps investors identify stocks with stronger momentum and better relative performance. It allows for more nuanced analysis beyond absolute price movements, enabling traders to make more informed decisions about potential entry and exit points based on a stock's performance relative to its market context.

When to explore it

Relative Strength is most effective when analyzing stocks across different market capitalizations and comparing their performance against appropriate benchmark indices. It works best during periods of market trends where sector and market-wide movements can be clearly distinguished.

Traders should use RS when evaluating potential investments, assessing portfolio composition, or identifying stocks with consistent outperformance. It is particularly useful for comparing stocks within the same sector or market segment, helping investors identify which stocks are showing the strongest relative performance and potential future momentum.
