How it works

Relative Strength (RS) calculates performance by dividing the price change of one asset by the price change of another asset or index over the same time period. The indicator oscillates around zero, with positive values indicating relative strength and negative values indicating relative weakness.

Traders can configure the RS indicator by selecting different time frames and comparison periods. The default settings typically include four periods: 500, 250, 125, and 63 days, which correspond to 2 years, 1 year, half a year, and one quarter respectively.

Why it may be useful

Relative Strength is crucial for momentum investors as it provides a clear comparative view of an asset's performance against a benchmark. By identifying which stocks are outperforming or underperforming, traders can make more informed investment decisions and potentially capitalize on emerging trends.

The indicator helps traders understand the relative performance of assets across different market conditions, enabling them to identify potential investment opportunities and compare the strength of different stocks or market segments more effectively.

When to explore it

Relative Strength is most effective when analyzing stocks within a specific sector or comparing a stock to a broader market index. It works best in markets with clear directional movements and can help traders identify potential momentum plays.

Traders should use RS when they want to compare the performance of different assets, identify potential leaders and laggards in a market, or develop a momentum-based investment strategy. It is particularly useful for selecting stocks for a portfolio or identifying potential trading opportunities.
